Before selling our house in Ottawa, Mat and I often did small house-sitting jobs for friends and family; but it wasn’t until we found out about professional house-sitting that we realized it could become part of our nomadic lifestyle.
Homeowners who travel for long periods of time, or who have pets, are often looking for house-sitters to come stay in their home and take care of things while they’re away. Since friends and neighbours don’t usually like to do it for more than a couple of weeks, they will often hire professionals to do it – and that’s where we come in!
In 2013, we traveled to Australia and took care of a beautiful house by the beach for 3 months. Now, we’re living in a stunning log cabin in the Pacific Northwest for 5 months. There are many reasons why we like to incorporate house-sitting into our travel plans, and here are just a handful of them:
1. We get to live rent-free.
2. It gives us stability between long periods of travel.
3. We get to experience living in a new place.
4. We have distraction-free time to read and work on creative projects.
5. We get to hang out with neat pets.
While we tend to prefer long-term house sitting jobs, there are all kinds of opportunities out there: short or long term, with or without pets, in hot or cold places, in castles or cabins. Take care and Happy 2015!
